Floral still life
I've done a lot of pen and watercolour in the last year and was itching to do a "real" painting again because I was starting to wonder if I still could. This arrangement was expensive to buy ($AU90!) but I liked the teapot - little did I know how tricky those ridges would be to paint! This was also my first time painting on a cradled wood panel. I all but destroyed one of my brushes, but hey, that's a good excuse to go shopping for more art supplies! Overall I'm happy with this as an impressionist piece, and I'm relieved to find I can still paint!

Algerian Girl (after Matisse)
A quick version of Matisse's "Algerian Girl". I wasn't being especially careful about colours - I just hadn't painted in gouache in ages and wanted to do something small to see if I still like it. (I do!)

Gouache on ATC, 64x89mm.
The 15th Doctor
This is a commission painting. He wanted a portrait of his son as a future Doctor Who. As a lifelong geek, and Doctor Who fan in particular, I was delighted to do this one and had loads of fun with it! It's based on a publicity photo taken of Peter Capaldi but recomposed to make it a better portrait.

Ink and watercolour on paper, 14x10".
Portrait of Cudees
Another of my portraits of my Instagram friends. This one surprised me - I drew it in pencil, painted it, but when I picked up the pen to add ink lines, as I have been in previous paintings, it very firmly told me "No!". My paintings often talk to me and tell me what they do or don't want. That's normal, right? Crazy

Portrait of Nicholas
I've been on a portrait painting binge for the last few months. I swore I'd never paint portraits again (I used to paint them in oils and acrylics) because they bring out the worst self-hating perfectionist in me. But for some reason, doing small (4x6") ones in pen and watercolour, even if the likeness isn't perfect (and none of them have been), I just really like these. Go figure.

Thanks for the :+fav: on my latest watercolor work, L.P.
With watercolour, you can't cover up the marks. There's the story of the construction of the picture, and then the picture might tell another story as well.

I'm glad someone does...
After all what is art without spectators?

And above all, watch with glittering eyes the whole world around you because the greatest secrets are always hidden in the most unlikely places. Those who don't believe in magic will never find it.
